Heritage Tourism
Thavinhal Grama Panchayat is a land where the breathtaking natural beauty of Wayanad coexists with a rich and living tribal heritage. The historic Periya Pass (Periya Ghat) stands as a remarkable landmark in the history of the region, bearing witness to a significant chapter in the struggle of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja against British rule.
On 18 March 1797, Pazhassi Raja’s guerrilla forces ambushed a British East India Company contingent led by Major Cameron at Periya Pass. The British force, comprising approximately 1,100 troops, was decisively defeated in the encounter. This historic battle stands as a testament to the strategic brilliance, courage, and resistance of Pazhassi Raja and his forces.
The indigenous tribal communities of Thavinhal Grama Panchayat are descendants of those who fought shoulder to shoulder with Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja in his resistance against the British. Their rich heritage continues to live through their traditional way of life, language, customs, attire, ornaments, arts, songs, cuisine, forest-based knowledge, and harmonious relationship with nature.
Preserving this invaluable tribal heritage and providing visitors with an authentic experience of indigenous life are central to the Heritage Tourism initiative of Thavinhal Grama Panchayat. The initiative also seeks to create a meaningful heritage journey—from the historic Periya Pass, where the memories of Pazhassi Raja’s resistance endure, through the landscapes and cultural traditions that continue to tell the story of this remarkable region.
Bringing together nature, culture, tribal heritage, and historical legacy, this sustainable tourism model offers immense potential to position Thavinhal as a distinctive and emerging destination on the tourism map of Wayanad.
